Traditional Therapies for Cold & Flu Season

By Dr.Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA

It is distressing to read in most media outlets the political spin applied to lack of flu vaccines in America. Prior to the last decade I can’t remember anyone worrying about or discussing flu shots. In my opinion, a balanced diet, vitamins and minerals, regular exercise and good overall health may be the best remedy in preventing flu symptoms. It appears that drug companies and the large pharmaceutical lobby has convinced everyone from elected officials to the public at large there is a desperate need for flu vaccines. Most MD’s will advise high-risk individuals to get flu shots; and if you are concerned, it may not be a bad idea. No one seems to be advising the public about the benefits of prevention except natural medicine practitioners. We can debate the merits of flu vaccine, but even the experts do not agree on the effectiveness of the shots. Serious questions remain unanswered regarding which strains they will and will not prevent, length and severity of the flu and how preventative measures compare in alleviating or eliminating flu symptoms. It is not our intent to dispense medical advice or treatment protocols, however, there are alternatives to safeguard against down time during the cold and flu season. The primary issue that most people do not understand is getting the flu is not the issue. In all likelihood, many of us will contract some strain of the flu virus in varying degrees. The severity and length of debilitating symptoms are the real problems. Building up your immune system and treating the symptoms early will determine how severely we are afflicted.

Herbalists for over a century have used Echinacea, Andrographis, Goldenseal, and Bilberry for prevention of colds and flu symptoms. World authority Dr. Linus Pawling spent his life researching Vitamin C and its benefits. Several natural medicine practitioners and alternative health care professionals advocate several grams of Vitamin C a day. Aromatherapists have used inhalation bowls of Eucalyptus and lemon to relieve congestion. Peppermint oil has properties that give energy and sinus relief. Dr. Richard Simmons advised sixty years ago, that his research indicated flu was contracted in the ear canal. A few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide and Alcohol in each ear would reduce or eliminate flu symptoms.

Avoid stress, exercise, eat a well balanced diet, take vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system before you feel flu symptoms and seek professional help if you become infected. The best antidote against the Influenza virus is education and prevention.
